Steve Knightley gig at Stanley Halls

Guineveretoo

Mostly bewildered
Hopefully, people have heard of Steve Knightley, who is a bit of a leftie/folkie type - here is what wikipedia says about him, in case people need reminding.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Knightley

Well, he is playing locally, at Stanley Halls. Next Wednesday, in fact. 5 February.

The bit that makes this different, and the reason why I am posting it here, is that this is a community initiative in which I am involved which is looking to save the Stanley Halls from dereliction. The halls were built by local philanthropist, William Stanley and are now in trust to Croydon Council, who have done nothing with them for years, so they are pretty tatty and in need of love and attention. The Council would sell them off if they could, and would probably knock them down or something, but they are not allowed to because of the Trust, and also because they are listed. The Council have, however, taken the art work (the halls include an art gallery which used to be open to the public) and are refusing to return it, but that is another matter.

This website has a good photo of the halls as they now are (some of them have already been hived off to an academy). http://www.peopleforportlandroad.org.uk/stanleyhalls.html

This gig is our first public gig, and is being run by volunteers in order to raise funds to help us get established (we are currently struggling with Charity Commission registration and battling against a Tory council who are just pains in the arse in every way). We have not yet sold out, so I am hoping to drum up some interest from you folks.

You get to enjoy an excellent gig, and in an historic building, which has been used for many purposes over the decades. It really is a beautiful set of buildings, and we are really keen to get them back in use, and run by the community, too!

There is going to be a bar, staffed by us poor volunteers, selling local beer and not so local wine, and we are going to sell tea and coffee as well, I think. You will probably find me there, somewhere, trying to work out how to collect the money and keep control of the stock. None of us are experts at this, and we can't employ anyone until we get Charity Commission stuff sorted. Once we are established, we are expecting to get funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, as well as some start up money from the Council which will help with running costs for the first year.

It is beautiful, inside and out. Although pretty tatty, as I say. Contractors have just finished doing some remedial work, just so that the halls can be used, but a lot of money and work is needed to get them to standard.

I'm glad to hear that the place is up and running enough for a gig to be viable (and safe :D). Would've come but I've other commitments on that night I'm afraid.

It's not really up and running enough - it's going to be a bit rough and ready, and we won't be doing another one for a while, because there's so much still to sort. But we didn't want to cancel this gig, which had been booked ages ago when we thought we would be closer to being ready.

I hope that some urbanites come. If we don't sell out in advance, we'll sell tickets on the door.

Bumping because this is tonight. I am just heading off there for training in how to sell tea and coffee. There is bar as well, though, selling bottled locally brewed beer, apparently.

There are still a few tickets left, but not many, as they have sold well. I think, if there are still some left, they will be sold on the door, but I haven't been "trained" yet, so how would I know :)

See some of you there.

In the end, I didn't do the tea and coffee (which involved ticking little boxes on sheets of paper to show every little thing which was sold, apparently!), but was on the door, failing to get the technology to work to scan people's tickets.

The gig was great, though, and was pretty much at capacity. We ran out of red wine and had to rush out and get more. I was convinced we would run out of beer, because of all the folkies, and they did drink all of the stuff in the barrel, but we ran out of red wine first!

Steve Knightley put this video on facebook before the gig, and actually mentions us, too!

And, to cap it all, we got the charity commission registration the next day (they were putting all kinds of bureaucratic blocks on it, which were miraculously removed on Thursday morning), so that we can now get on and sort out more gigs, move towards employing a centre manager, opening the cafe, and whatever the community wants us to do! People who are local please join the mailing list so that you can find out what is planned, let us know what you want, and, maybe, help out :)

Oh shame I didn't see this. I'd have liked to see Steve Knightley.
I've driven past the halls so many times but thought it was part of the school.

Only the back bits, the front bit i.e. the main visible bit is run by the Trust. I was inside a few times earlier this winter as was doing a smidge of volunteering. It's a fantastic space and NEEDS to be returned to former glories as a much-loved community space.
