Royal pardon for codebreaker Alan Turing

one of the most brilliant minds of his generation, pivotal in information theory and cryptography. Huge contribution to the war effort and the state drove him to suicide because he wasn't het. The crown can shove that pardon up their fucking arses. He never needed a pardon or a conviction from them.

I saw this this morning - great news as I've been following the campaign for this. Long overdue, and that law should never have been on the statute book in the first place. I read this morning that it passed the House in 1885 with only four minutes of debate - and subsequently caused untold anguish, broken relationships, lost jobs, shame and obviously some suicides.

To all those petty-minded religious moralists who constantly want to pry into other people's sex lives - FUCK OFF AND MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS.

why are you happy with them?

We had this on the M&S thread. There don't need to be principles or arguments involved in moral judgements; I merely approve of the strictures associated with both laws. I think the onus would be on someone who wanted them changed to explain why; they are both pretty much universal.

ok, why do you "approve" of them?

Because the incest taboo serves a useful purpose and because teenagers are too easy to coerce into doing things they regret to be left to make their own choices. They shouldn't be allowed to get into debt, either, for instance.

Do you seriously disagree with either position or are you merely being Pickmansish?

if what you say is true then why are notions of consanguinous relationships variable over time and between cultures; also why do you feel the age of consent should not be raised to encompass all teenagers?

I think you know what I meant - it was in context of religious idiots who have an issue with homosexuality, and didn't refer to age of consent or incest or whatever.

Yes, I know what you mean, but the problem with homophobia isn't that it's prying into people's sex lives, it's just that it's an indefensible form of prying. It's more than a Pickmansesque cavil, the point is quite important. Sex doesn't happen in a purely private realm.

Because all moral judgements are imprecise and fuzzy, even when they are widely shared, and law has to be clear and unarguable. Again, why are you pretending this is problematic?

why fo you refuse to support the extension of the protection afforded under 16s to 16, 17, 18 and 19 year olds when you declare teenagers are easily coerced etc?

Well, I'll admit that on occasion I've had sex in the public realm, but I never made a habit of it. :D

i think pardoning implies a level of acceptance.

what maybe i would really like would this to be a symbolic pardon which was combined with a big speech from crown and parliament about the massive injustice that occurred in the past.

maybe it's impossible to address all the injustucises of the past but i would like this tied into an active stance for the future

give turing a royal pardon sure. and then include a big chunk of the queens speach which implicitly links being brittish to being LBGT&H equal

dn't white wash the past embrace a better future

You know it's going to be the usual stuff about our brave armed forces and families

When it's Charlie's turn he'll bang on about young people, farming, the environment and food..

Perhaps Wills might do something, where's the 2014 celebrity death list thread?

This posted in answer to my question on the other thread is worth a read (Corax as I have cross posted his answer).

I find this a little suspicious when you combine it with the anti-gay censorship the government have just brought in.

The two may be connected.

That's an absurd way of describing a populist anti-porn measure which relies on a mendacious and corner-cutting whitelisting/blacklisting industry. And then it's an even more absurd conclusion to jump to.
