RIP Bob Miller, Oldham Anarchist.

taffboy gwyrdd

Embrace the confusion!
Some in the NW may have known Bob, a stalwart of the Manchester AFed.

He was diagnosed with stomach cancer a couple of months back and sadly passed away on Friday.

Activists in the area have been shocked and saddened by the news, he was a great influence and friend to many as well as being a great communicator of anarchist politics in an accessible populist fashion.

The funeral will be at Blackley Crematorium, 3pm Friday. No black, flowers from family only.

Condolences to his family and friends.

I was an avid reader of the journal, Subversion, that was produced by Bob and his comrades back in the late 80s and early 90s.

I knew Bob for years, from corresponding during Subversion (and a few other previous projects) and ten years or whatever it was in the AF. Others on here knew him and worked with him for even longer. He was one of the Organise editors when i was and was always on-the-ball, always looking to share out the skills he's picked up in his 40 years of activity, rarely lost his temper and was always encouraging - esp those unsure of themselves or their abilities. RIP comrade.

(Should just point out that it was Friday week, not last friday)

It was Oldham and Manchester that Bob was active in, not Bolton.
Will you be attending the funeral this coming Friday, butchers, ?
I first met Bob in 1972 so we go a long way back. this has been terrible news.
Bob's generosity, his non-sectarianism , his political longevity and his revolutionary optimism were inspiring. I wish I could maintain my temper (ha!) the way he did his.

Sorry for the inaccuracy there. As I typed it I was thinking "was it Oldham?", I just knew him as "Bob" from the Manchester scene, and I think the sound of "bob" and "bolton" went together in my head too easily. Soz again.

Worked with him when I lived in Manchester. Had heard about the cancer, still shocking to hear.

I knew Bob over the years. We didn't approach Anarchism from the same directions but I always admired his integrity. A true gentleman. He'll be much missed.

The link to Subversion 12, with the article on Militand and gay rights, leads to the page for Subversion 18. Can someone sort this out?

Manchester Anarchist Bookfairs will never be the same again without Bob and his family energetically bouncing around i feel.
Great bloke, beautiful family, really sad news to hear.

RIP Comrade

Can someone change the thread title to Oldham Anarchist?

I did, but it didn't seem to hold did it? will try again.

ETA: Won't allow it, many apologies, changes heading within thread but not of thread as seen on board.

As I said, I only knew Bob in a Manchester context. Probably met him first at The Basement Social Centre, then in anti ID card campaigns. Such charisma combined with uncomprimising politics, simple bluntness and humour is pretty rare. Looking at the tributes on the AF thread and elsewhere it was clear he was held very dearly.

fuck, I know Bob from my time up in Manchester. Can only echo all the things people on this thread have said about him. A great shame. RIP

300 people attended Bob's funeral, and 50 off them were AF members. A sign of the great respect Bob had in life.
Not an experience i'd like to repeat very soon. It was a very painful experience. Despite the very postitive take on Bob's life at the funeral and wake, he was snatched away too soon and the full import of that is still sinking in.
