Rest is Noise bar/pub, Brixton

ska invita

back on the other side
Popped into the new pub incarnation that is Rest is Noise - seemed like hell on earth (though so was its predecessor Ivans Retreat).

Looked it up online and supposedly there's set to be weekly dub/reggae session from the Blacker Dread crew. Anyhow, did I just catch it at a bad time? Felt like an attempt to implement cool, but I dont think its going to work...

I'm always very disturbed by the window display as I've gone past on the bus, including the blow-up dolls there.

Having said that, I guess it's not really designed to cater for people like me is it?

i think theyre going for a shoreditch thing

Perhaps they ought to move to Shoreditch instead then, if that's what they're looking for. This is Brixton.

It seems VERY Shoreditch, and the skinny-jeaned hipsters outside on Saturday night seemed to confirm it. The window 'art' display is pure Nathan Barley.

ajdown, are you defending Brixton?!?! shocking! :D

I live here, and it isn't all bad. Yes, there are a lot of things I'd like to change if I had my way, but that's not for this discussion.

Personally I'm not a drinker so visiting any of the pubs or bars round Brixton is not something I'd be doing in a hurry. Having said that, out of not going to any pubs or bars, this place looks like somewhere I'd particularly make a point of not going to.

Just trying to make the point that this place looks quite unsuitable for the area, that's all.

i am glad we're slowly converting you :):)

I liked Ivan's Retreat (not my first choice of pub but I have been in a lot worse). The appearance of Rolo Tomassi as an up coming gig proves this'll be pretentious.

I'd say that it was rammed on those occasions. It was often busy at other times, especially straight after work.

the people behind it have got a fairly good pedigree if you're after very "of the moment" club nights / band line-ups, and if they're doing some interesting free stuff then it can't be all bad.

Ivan's Retreat was often busy. I expect this place will be too.
Almost every time I've been there - or walked past - it was resolutely empty.

I'm thinking I'm outside the target demographic, but the more free live music venues the better in Brixton as far as I'm concerned.

I used to go in there sometimes after workfor a lemonade and work on my Sudoku game. And it was always practically empty. Anyone notice that old bald headed guy that used to be in there all the time? I think he owned the place?

i second that, and dont want to be down on it for no reason - unfortunately the vibe was bad enough that i didnt even stay for one drink, prefering to have a can in the street! cant put my finger on it, but i just felt uncomfortable in there.

think we're going along on friday to make up minds, Heatwave are doing a set.
It's run by the Camden Lock & Ammersham Arms people. Seems like the booking policy is OK, i think Brixton needs a new venue.

Fuck, Honkeyfinger is playing there tomorrow night. Totally recommend catching that, the guy is crazy. One man, 20 pedals, some beat up home made guitars, harmonicas and a holler. :D

As was mentioned on the chatter thread I think, the same people own TRIN as owned IR, so it's just been rebranded rather than sold to someone new. And you only do that if a place isn't doing great business.

I agree that it looks promising, and I hope to see some cool stuff there. But we poked our head in today after the Pixies and it looked pretty grim. I think the problem is that the venue - try as they have - isn't intimate, and it just feels like a meat market.

It was a horrible shaped venue as a bar and I don't imagine it'll be much better as a gig.

Let me make it clear- I'm no fan of the place, but I have been down there many times on a Friday for 'work drinks' and it's been busy and got even busier as it's turned into Friday evening.

I think I've also been Saturday day- dead, obviously, and Saturday evenings where it's been busy.

Not my choice of venue at all, I prefer a pub. But I'm not going to stubbornly say it's always empty just cos I don't like it.
