Racist Police Commissioner refuses to apologize

Yuwipi Woman

Whack-A-Mole Queen
On March 6, Jane O’Toole was in a Wolfeboro, N.H., restaurant when she heard a town police commissioner call President Obama “the ‘N’ word.” In an email response to O’Toole’s complaint to town officials, the commissioner, Robert Copeland, admitted to having made the comment, writing, “I believe I did use the ‘N’ word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse. For this, I do not apologize — he meets and exceeds my criteria for such,” according to a report from the Associated Press and the New York Times.

I have never seen so much hate directed at a President in my entire life. FFS get over the race thing. Its not just expressing disagreement with the President, its classing an entire group of people as unworthy. Its especially concerning when it involves law enforcement. They need to get a recall election going as soon as possible.

The institution of slavery only ended in the US 150 years ago. That might seem a long time because it's before any of our lifetimes, but in terms of change in core societal beliefs - it's not that long.

This man is 82. I keep hoping that when the younger generation steps up, things will change.

police Commissioner Robert Copeland said:
“While I believe the problems associated with minorities in this country are momentous, I am not phobic. My use of derogatory slang in reference to those among them undeserving of respect is no secret. It is the exercise of my 1st Amendment rights,” it read. “I believe I did use the ‘N’ word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse (sic). For this I do not apologize – he meets and exceeds my criteria for such.”

*apologise

sorry, couldn't resist :p

Both spellings seem valid, I suspect the 'z' spelling is the American way... which seems appropriate in a thread started by an American about some stuff that happened and then didn't happen in the United States of America.;)

You clearly missed the hatred spewed at GW Bush; how is this worse than calling Bush a chimp? But the polarisation of American and British politics is worrying.

 Calling bush a "chimp" is different because it doesn't extend to an entire ethnic group. Calling Obama a "nigger" doesn't criticize his policies. It defames an entire group of people who have a history of ill treatment in the US.

And because it's the sort of thing a massive unrepentant racist would say and only a massive idiot who didn't think nigger was racist could even think to argue was the same as calling a white bloke chimp. I'm quite gobsmacked by this latest quartz idiocy to be honest.

Had someone called Obama a chimp it would have been worse and you know why. But they didn't regardless.

Fuck's sake

well, he may have said that, but "nigger"

In case it wasn't clear that was me being sarcastic - "Chris Rock Says The N Word So Why Not Me" is in the top rung of Shit Arguments Used By Racists. Of course, he removed that bit of the act in 2005 - "By the way, I've never done that joke again, ever, and I probably never will. 'Cos some people that were racist thought they had license to say nigger. So, I'm done with that routine" - but that doesn't stop people.

If you wanted to piss around, you could make a case for your first bit- it wouldn't stand up because the reasons why Bush and Obama get stick are (obviously) different. However your second is beyond staggering. FFS!

No hang on, why don't you spell it out? Why do you think accusations of personal stupidity (chimp) are just as bad as calling someone a nigger?

People tore into Bush, called him names etc, because he came across as a bumbling, boneheaded idiot who took a region of the world into dubious wars.

Some people tear into Obama, call him names etc, because he is of African ancestry.

I remember you triumphantly posting up a huge collage image of GWB's face during an urban election vigil at either the first or second time he was elected, at once it was clear that he had won (most of us rooted for the other guy), provoking dub to call you something offensive because you clearly did it just to piss us off... IIRC you also confessed your support for both Bush jr. and the republican party. No offense to you personally johnny, but were you just trolling back then, or have you changed your views since? You don't have to answer, btw- just confusing me a bit. :hmm: (I'm not trying to start an argument, just genuinely curious.) It was enormously depressing at the time, it felt like the world had ended because of what had happened and it was the most destructive and awful result possible and we just wanted to cry but it felt like you were gloating, so it was really really fucking depressing.

Really? As I recall, Democrats tore into Bush well before he won the Presidency. The Guardian's Steve Bell used the chimp in November 2000. And I'll point out that offence was taken when Obama was likened to an ape. Isn't turnabout supposed to be fair play?

Two wrongs don't make a right, but the blind partisanship on both sides does not help.
