GE aviation bought a company called Morris Technologies, they're the people with 3D printing expertise. To produce 3D printed parts, Morris Technologies purchased a direct metal laser sintering machine made by Munich-based EOS and then voided the warranty by upgrading the machine to a higher spec.

By 2005, Morris Technologies had upgraded the direct laser sintering machine from a carbon dioxide-based laser to a fibre-optic laser. The more powerful laser allowed the company to start working with more exotic metals, including cobalt-chromium, Inconel 718, Inconel 626 and various titanium and aluminum alloys.

Other modifications focused on controlling the environment inside the printing chamber. Consumers can buy 3D printers with a guarantee of 10,000 oxygen parts per million inside the printing chamber. The best manufacturing machines available on the market offer better quality, limiting oxygen to 2,000 parts per million. The Morris Technologies machines are rated to maintain an atmosphere of 50 parts per million.
