Plaid leftie Leanne Wood gets most nominations for leadership.

Aren't Elis-Thomas's 'nationalist' credentials fatally undermined by him accepting a knighthood from the Queen of England?

Isn't he a Lord, not a knight? same principle applies though. We'll see how it plays out. Be funny if someone brings it up on the trail.

I don't know the difference tbh. But he was 'made a Lord' in 1992 - under the Tories. So... bending the knee to Mrs Windsor... sponsored by Thatcher or Major... sounds like just the chap to put the interests of the Welsh people ahead of his own.. Yep. I'd throw it up at the cunt at every opportunity.

And even if yer wan Leanne can't use it herself... she could quietly encourage others to dos so. Who is he likely to nick votes off btw?

My instinct suggests it would be good for Plaid (and Wales) and bad for Welsh Labour - although criticism from the left might push them in a better direction.

Carwyn Jones and Leanne Wood tied in battle to become Welsh first minister

Grauniad said:
The Labour party in the Welsh assembly has failed to get Carwyn Jones re-elected as first minister of Wales, after Plaid Cymru, the Tories and Ukip united against him.

The leader of Plaid Cymru, Leanne Wood, was level with Jones with 29 votes each after receiving the support of other parties who won seats from Labour in the recent local elections, including the Conservatives and Ukip.

The tied vote throws the process into confusion. The current meeting of the assembly has been adjourned until further notice, while the parties go into talks in an attempt to break the stalemate.

Had Kirsty Williams, the sole Liberal Democrat in the assembly, voted with the other opposition parties, Wood would have become the first minister despite Labour being by far the largest party. “I was not re-elected to support a ragtag coalition,” said Williams.

Jesus.

Plaid have dropped some mealy-mouthed bullshit that will only fly with true believers (suppose there's a chance it was just a way of forcing Labour to the table though? Risky business, that Tory shit sticks. Or does it, I guess the SNP did a deal with them and they seem to have done alright...).

On May 5th, Wales chose not to elect one single party to govern Wales with a majority. As is the convention, the biggest party were given an opportunity to reach an agreement on forming a government which could lead Wales with the support of the majority of members in the national assembly. They took the decision not to pursue that option, and were not prepared to give the process of negotiation any further time.

As a result, the Plaid Cymru group followed normal parliamentary protocol and nominated Leanne Wood for first minister. Carwyn Jones was informed of this decision yesterday. Since that time, and as far as Plaid Cymru is aware, there have been no formal discussions, agreements or deals pursued between any party.

This afternoon, the assembly failed to reach agreement on who should become first minister and form the next government. It is now for the parties to discuss this matter further in order to seek the best outcome for Wales.

She's not in bed with the vermin and the kippers. She didn't tell them how to vote. It's politics. It's a massive shot across Labour's bows. I guess the point now will be to try and extract concessions from Labour for allowing Jones to continue. It's a high risk strategy all the same because there's every chance Labour will tell PC to fuck off and they'll risk another election. Wood is not going to attempt to govern with a coalition of Tories and Kippers, I assure you.

surely a shot across the bows by definition not a strategy. no matter: better than your usual efforts.

So you're believing Hamilton? I think I'd probably trust the Plaid version over that, the one you've missed out where they say they only told UKIP Wood was intending to stand. Wouldn't be like Hamilton to whip up some shit for his own purposes would it?

I don't believe UKIP any more than PC any more than Labour any more than Tories. That's what the Beeb are reporting that's all.

If its not true, then I think Plaid would do well to quash that asap.

It doesn't matter who's lying. This is what happens when you do a deal - however tenuous - with scum.

Hamilton claims they were approached by Plaid.

He might be lying. But it doesn't matter, the shit still sticks.
Heh as far as Hamilton is concerned I would think a good starting point is to assume he's lying anyway. However if she has approached them wtf? I voted for her btw just hoping it wasn't a mistake now though tbh i have very little sympathy with Carwyn Jones especially after he foisted the Nato conference off on us last year with little or no consultation.
