mixcloud/soundcloud question

tendril

Coming up blastin' like Yosemite Sam
I have uploaded mixes to mixcloud but there doesn't seem to be an option for allowing them to be downloaded, whilst plenty of peeps put up mixes on soundcloud (which I thought was for individual songs) and they can be downloaded. have I missed something here?

soundcloud just has a limit for the amount of time, or the amount of megs u can upload. So you can do songs or mixes

Mixcloud is for mixes, but doesnt allow downloading......

so, generally a mix on soundcloud must be short if it is a high bitrate or low bitrate if it is long?

The people with mixes on soundcloud will have paid accounts. You can download from mixxloud btw. Just not officially.

No, mixcloud doesn't let you download (well not officially - there's at least one website that will let you do it though). Afaik, Mixcloud has an agreement with several of the music licensing/rights groups that allows users to post their mixes up, Mixcloud will cover doing so, but on the strict basis that they cannot be downloaded, only streamed.

Soundcloud on the other hand does not have the same sort of agreement over music licensing/rights, and regards itself as a hosting site really for people uploading music for stream and/or download. Therefore, that makes the uploader completely responsible for what they post and record labels, publishers are able to make an infringement claim at any time against the user, rather than Soundcloud.

In addition, Soundcloud put in an automatic recognition system last year which will check parts of an uploaded track or mix to see if there is any infringement claim from some of the big boys - EMI, Capitol, etc. I've run into this a few times myself with mixes but its usually only well known artists that get blocked.

when you mean not officially do you mean that the person needs to record the stream or there is a secret way of doing it that is not obvious on the actual site?

I have mixes on soundcloud without paid account.

You can fit upto about an 45 min mix on soundcloud without paying.......

Infact i think you get a limit per month, so if you use that limit you cant upload anymore until the next month.

I know fo' sho' you can do it using the activity window in safari on a mac ;)

well all my mixes are from released vinyl so I'm guessing that would apply to me ;)

Well don't be put off because of that - I've been using Soundcloud for all my mixes, because I like the site over Mixcloud and wanted streaming and downloading (for urban), and for almost two years I've not ran into any problems whether it be hardcore, garage, d'n'b, techno and independent label stuff. Tbh, most independent label philosophies are that mixes are a good thing, not a bad one!

The only time I have run into it was late last year with my most recent mix because it included tunes on the major label fascists EMI/Warner. There are still ways and means though ;)

^ thats my mate, and the mix he's got up currently is 1hr 14 mins, and there's no way he would have paid

You get 2 hours with a free account.

And whilst I 'ummed and arred' about it, I eventually went for a paid account for the extra space and have been really happy with it.

Maybe I should download safari for the PC (I use firefox atm)

In Safari for Windows you can use Ctrl+Alt+A to get to the Activity window, or Show Menu Bar so you can choose it from the Window menu like you did on the Mac.

Taken from here: http://www.ultrashock.com/forum/viewthread/86533/

Find the aspect of the page which is about the right size for an hour long Mp3, something like 100 megs in file size, double click it and it should download.

There's a website out there that allows you to enter the Mixcloud mix link into it and then it gives you a download of it - site name escape me atm though.

Ah that's it.

Soundcloud is still really worth looking at though - especially if you're playing independent label dance music which is mostly what goes on there. Most dance labels seem to generally embrace DJs putting up mixes/promoting their stuff.

And don't get me wrong, I think its right that artists get paid, but major labels getting aggressive and pulling stuff when its part of a mix always seemed OTT to me - after all you're not uploading a track in its entirety and you're a small time DJ not making any money out it.

I've never really looked into what Mixcloud offers in regards to how much space/mix-time you get, whether there are paid options, etc.

Been using Soundcloud for about 2 years now and this weekend is the first time I have run into problems up-loading a mix. Seems Simple Minds's record company have some kind of dispute over a tune. I am pleased that rather than put you at risk they just refuse to up-load the mix (bloody clever bit of kit they must have) I managed to up-load the mix to Mixcloud. I first looked at Mixcloud about 2 years ago and decided it was not for me. The site has changed in the last two years and I really like the feel of it and the layout, fast up-loading as well. There are an awfull lot of big hitters on Soundcloud sending 000's of people and groups the same mixes over and over and over again. I think I will keep Soundcloud for my new and most recent mixes then move them over to Mixcloud after a couple of months. Another big ++ on Mixcloud is no time limit and it is free. I have about 40+ mixes, so as I get time I will try and stick them all on Mixcloud.

That is exactly how you should do it Zeedoodles :)

Mixcloud is good for storing the bulk, but keep Souncloud for new/current stuff. I always leave a link on my mixcloud stating that the mixes are available to download on my soundcloud.

Soundcloud is better for embedding, mixcloud embeds looks ugly imo. However, you do seem to get more music lovers on mixcloud, and more music creators on soundcloud, so its good to have both I would say.

ALSO: you can tell if someone has a paid account as they have a star next to their name. They also seem to appear at the top of 'following' / 'followers' lists I think.

Nope, the free account gives you two hours regardless of bitrate - I uploaded a 2hr WAV for Christmas, it took all night but hey!

offliberty works with a lot of streamed files. i use it mainly for soundcloud mixes that are not available for downloading
Offliberty - evidence of offline life - it works for mixcloud too
I just tried offliberty to download from SoundCloud. It isn't working. I just paste the link to offliberty and choose to download as MP3. Then it jumps to a blank page. ??? I've tried several times, still working like this. Did I do anything wrong? I'm confused.

do you right click on the tab rather than just pressing it.
offliberty isn't very good - just install Soundcloud Music Downloader on Chrome - much easier and quicker

I don't know, it still not working on Chrome. Maybe my browser has set some restrictions on this. But the Soundcloud Music Downloader that you recommend is awesome. Thanks a lot.:thumbs:
