mass grave of 800 infants found at Galway 'fallen women' home

Is there a thread for this? Couldn't see one.

Awful details here.

People should be jailed for this  all these wafty dismissals of 'it was a different time' - no it fucking wasn't, it was still happening 53 years ago. A septic tank for God's sake. Dumped like so much rubbish. I've emailed to find out if there's a Paypal address or something to send donations to, the woman in the article is trying to raise funds to put up a plaque with their names on so at least there's some record that these poor little scraps existed.

Horrific.

Reminds me, too, that while the Catholic Church has always been vociferously pro-life with regard to unborn children, it's historically not shown as much concern for life after birth, and the apologia made in the article tends to signal the Church's continued power "behind-the-scenes" in the politics of the Republic.

Not just live with themselves, claim to be christian. How incredibly sad

To at least some of them, they weren't killing children through neglect, they were punishing/purging children tainted with the "evil" of bastardy and with original sin. This may not be the logical outcome of trusting religious fanatics to care for sinners, but I'd contend that it's historically proven to be a fairly routine outcome. :(

Fucking hell.:(

How does that happen? That trying to be right and moral somehow results in you literally throwing children away. Some of them would probably be well up for a good old stake burning or fifty given the opportunity.

I read the opening chapter of Phileomea and how to save money the Nuns insisted the Mothers breast feed the children and kept them till the age of 3. Allowing Mothers the chance to bond and care for the children fully aware in the knowledge they would be sold to wealthy americans is fucking cruel. This is just fucking barbaric.

Therefore effectively admitting that the limbo/purgatory thing was completely made up in the first place.

I'm trying to dig up that Mother Teresa quote where she argued against contraception saying the brief suffering of a child's life born into poverty and starvation was a gift to god.

Cunt Bitch.

There's plenty of stuff about the real behaviour of the 'sainted' Mother Theresa. Hitchens book 'The Missionary Position' is rather good.

As if by 'magic' there's a cracking wee drama series on BBC1 at the moment called Quirke, set in 1950's Dublin, that touches on the selling of children from these homes.

Every single little body's remains should be exhumed, autopsied and given proper burial.
It's not good enough that this is not investigated fully.
This would be a proper memorial to the dignity of those poor children's lives.
It is despicable that any state funded body gets away with this.
It is horrendous that these people claimed to be acting in the name of Jesus...and Christianity.
Sickening..... :( :( :(

What the suffering fuck has gone on in this world when there is a single hotmail address collecting for a memorial plaque after an appalling, serial crime like this, for the moral few with a sense of misguided guilt to put aside a few pounds each? When those that carried it out did so in the name of the single richest financial institution on the whole fucked up planet?

Jesus wept. And yes i'm aware of the irony in what I just wrote. Poor kids, life treated as so cheap.

I cant understand why this has not been investigated by the gardai? People are responsible for this. The Bons Secours need to open up the books on it and allow a full criminal investigation to take place.
It's inconceivable that the first mention of this in general media is a request for funds for a memorial!
I suspect there are many more children's bodies buried in mass graves in other mother and babies homes :(

Very little traction from Catholic friends where I've posted the link on my FB. It's the school thing that binds them in, even though they don't believe really.

None of my Catholic friends (I mean the ones who still are practicing Catholics, go to church, send their kids to Catholic schools, put pics of first communion on their facebook etc etc) have commented on it at all. I guess they don't want to see it.

I've had a bit of a go at a couple of friends recently and that's about the size of it. Heads in the sand. No correlation between them sending kids to Catholic schools because they have better results, qualifying by going to church all of a sudden and the discrimination against non-hypocrites in selection criteria. It's nothing to do with the historic child abuse, the spread of AIDS in Africa because their church said contraception was a sin, oh no.

See no evil indeed. :(

Horrific, just horrific. The descriptions of children suffering, basically, from starvation in mid 20c Ireland are unbelievable.

You'd sort of think given the history of the famine thats the last thing you'd let happen.
Nearly a 1000 bodies found in a septic tank and people are being silent about wtf.

Its a level of evil that the sort of bigoted unionist fuckhead, you know priest wear dresses to hide their cloven feet etc would think was ott.
Thrown in a septic tank:(

Irish abuses as a form of 'honour crimes':

We are told it was a different time, and things are different now.

Youth Defence still sell their pins online. Joan Burton continues her crusade to paint single mothers as lazy and worthless. National newspapers will freely print opinion pieces denigrating them. 796 dead children will get a memorial but no one will be held to account for their deaths. Those who ask for it will be told to be kind. The religious orders who put them in a septic tank will continue unquestioned. Those who put the women in Magdalene Laundries will continue to work for “fallen women”. Women will be denied control over their own bodies. They will die for the want of medical care.

It must be so. To do otherwise, would bring shame on the family.
