It could only happen to Julian Assange

Some context:
Julian Assange has complained he will have to buy a copy of his own newly-published autobiography to find out its contents after he failed to block its release.
The WikiLeaks founder tried to cancel his contract for the memoir after reading a first draft, but publishers Canongate Books went ahead with its publication today against his wishes.
In the book, Mr Assange (40) suggests that rape allegations against him could have been concocted by the US government and says he knew that “forces” would eventually trap him.
He dismisses claims that he sexually assaulted two women in Sweden in August last year, writing: “I may be a chauvinist pig of some sort but I am no rapist.”
Mr Assange condemned Edinburgh-based Canongate’s publication of the book, billed on the cover as an “unauthorised autobiography”, describing it as a case of “screwing people over to make a buck”.
He said the published memoir was a “work in progress” written by his Scottish ghost-writer Andrew O’Hagan, based on interviews and stressed it was “entirely uncorrected or fact-checked by me”.
In a strongly-worded statement, he added: “I will have to buy ‘my autobiography’ in order to learn the extent of the errors and inaccuracies of the content of the book, but the damage is done.”

I don't think him being a pervert really lessens his working integrity. Look at Martin Luther King. Then again, look at Berlusconi.
Hmmm. Think I need a coffee. :)

I don't know as its a case of 'not understanding publishing' so much as being a control freak, trying to change the terms of a deal half-way through, wanting his cake & to eat it too.

And if the establishment are looking for ways to fuck with him, which is a reasonable bet, then he is an even bigger idiot because he has given them an open goal on several occasions. When the sex stuff first came out I commented that if he was well aware of the potential for traps, he should have been careful not to put himself in a compromising position, but he did quite the opposite.

By having sex?

JULIAN Assange is not really getting a taste of his own medicine because he is not a huge, deceitful government, experts have confirmed.

As the Wikileaks founder tried to stop the publication of his own memoirs, he was accused of hypocrisy by people who prefer not to have fully formed thoughts.

Roy Hobbs, a sales executive from Stevenage who thinks famine relief does more harm than good, said: "This is an important victory for all those who are sent to jail unless they give 40% of their income to Julian Assange.

"I'll wager he will now use his unprecedented military and economic power to have his publisher arrested for rape."

But specialists in medicine taking stressed there were a handful of key differences between a private citizen with a laptop and an organisation with a trillion dollar budget and 'stuff' like Navy SEALs and the CIA

Professor Henry Brubaker, of the Institute for Studies said: "He's not exposing things that 'people' want to keep secret, he is exposing things that huge, venal, corrupt entities, bristling with state of the art death and who regard you as part cash machine, part cannon fodder, want to keep secret.

"Please, for the love of Buddha, tell me you understand the difference."

He added: "And by the way, just because he looks slightly creepy does not actually mean he's the baddie."

The Indy's article sort of helps answer my question, control freak tendencies and inability to return advance coupled with bad grace on the publisher's part. Control freak does seem to be a concurrent theme remebering Rusbridger's interview about it on R4's media show. He must surely realize "the stuff Assange doesn't want you to know" given the nature of what he does, is a selling point. And these guys know the legal in's and outs far better than he does. Presumably now though, Indy is on his shit list what with them serializing extracts.

Read the Daily Mail's version of events , which is why, I'm guessing most of the rest of the thread is banging on about sex. Presume its in the Metro as well. A lot of people go on about Murdoch, and while the NoW was the biggest selling, giving your bigotted rants newspaper away means not included in circulation figures. Dacre is as bad.

you need to think of 'have' being similar to 'keep'. so - you want to eat it, but you also want it still to be there (presumably for eating later). HTH
Well you'd just buy another one, it's not like they're in short supply with all the middle class cup cake shops that have sprung up all over the place recently because they don't want to get a proper job like everyone else has to

I saw Assange on 60 Minutes las month. Someone's been giving him coaching on image and media handling. He came off mostly sane in that interview.

Oh for goodness sake, go down to any mid-town disco on a Saturday night.....
He's in the public eye, and he should know better as he's pissed off a lot of important people.

If you're going to be in the public eye for what he is then you have to pick your conquests a little more carefully. He'd actually have been better off pulling a slapper that had never heard of him from whatever the local equivalent of Ritzy's was.

Especially sex stuff, yes. Someone like Assange that thinks they are a target of interest and think they know how these games are played, should be on the lookout for honeytraps.

Yes. He should have had someone else in the room, to ensure that everything was on the up and up.

He was asking for it?
He was the equivalent of being passed out in an alley with his skirt hitched up, a wet t-shirt that says 'fuck me' and no knickers on if you wish to extend that analogy, though I'm not sure it quite washes.

Someone who makes it their mission to expose the secrets and dirty tricks and dodgy dealings of various wealthy governments should be a bit more aware of the possibility of dirty tricks though - from women, governments, publishers, etc.

He seems woefully unaware quite often.

Has anyone read this? if so, can you tell me what his hammer 'attack' on an 'obnoxious' girl at his school was about?

I don't think it is dealt with very well by the looks of the following extract from the Indy, its just mentioned in passing.

They sent me to some kind of Steiner-style school where it was all about expressing yourself. There was an obnoxious little girl who wouldn't share, and in accordance with the school's philosophy, I decided to express myself without hindrance, so I hit her over the head with a hammer. This caused a giant fuss, of course, and I had to leave, although the girl was fine. We just kept moving.
