How do you know what's a good pillow?

I'm so sick of buying pillows that turn into pancakes after a few months.

I've had those hollow-fibre ones that you can apparently wash except you can't because they all just seem to clump up.

I've bought the hypoallergenic ones that supposedly bounce back

I've had duck feather that have just gone flat

I did have a fantastic goose down one that didn't go flat but I never took note of the name.

I also had a goose down one that went totally flat.

There's sales on and I just don't know what to get. Obviously I don't want to spend ridiculous amounts and it would be nice to get two so we can both have a new one but I just don't know if I spend £15 on a pillow (that was originally £30) how good it'll be. :(

Been recommended Memory Foam pillows.

We got new ones (goose down) before the recommendation from TK MAXX (shudder) and they were about £15 a pop I recall.

You got new goose down ones from TX Maxx and they were £15? Each?

were they crap then?

Don't want to have to order off internet or go anywhere. Was more interested in just picking some up from House of Fraser as I was passing

I have a memory foam pillow and I recommend it. It was a bit weird at first but I love it now. No flattening, very supportive, easy to wash.

They don't clump up after washing?

They look a funny size. Are they standard pillow-case size? Are they still comfortable if you sleep with your arm under them or does the pillow lose shape ifkwim?

No clumping. It's foam. Like in your sofa seat.

Mine is smaller than a standard pillowcase, so yes the pillowcase is a bit big. I don't know about sleeping with your arm under them, I don't do that. The pillow doesn't lose shape though, just molds to your head shape.

Look good, I like the neck support bit. Bit pricey though :(

Apparently not all memory foam pillows are created equal. They are made out of different grades of foam. I believe it is, indeed, one of this instances where you get what you pay for. Within reason.

I went the whole hog and bought a dead good one. Suffered from neck, shoulder and upper back pain every single goddamn night before I got it. Since I've had it (well over 6 months now) I've had pain maybe 3 times.

Mine fits my pilow case perfectly. It came with its own thick cover, and you can wash that, but afaik you are not supposed to wash the actual pillow. The cover on it is thick enough that that isn't an issue though.

I often sleep on my side, sometimes with my arm under the pillow, and it's fine. It moulds around your arm underneath, and your head/neck on top.

Best thing I've ever, ever bought.

It would seem so. There's a lot of disgruntled customers here:

TK MAXX is usually about half price and these were in their half price Jan sale.
So far they have been comfy and nice but PM me in 6 months and I will let you know how my neck feels :)

Goodness

Mine is from these folks: http://www.relyon.co.uk/index.asp but I can't see that they make them anymore, which is weird. Got it from a proper stockist though, so it's not fake. My local Debenhams used to sell them too.

Goodness indeed. It would seem that there are lots of poor imitations out there, so I think I may just wait a while 'til I can 1) afford one, 2) suss out which have a good reputation other than the Tempur ones. :D

The more you spend on a pillow, the longer it will last. Buying cheap Asda pillows is a false economy. They will become pancake-like within a few months.

I always go to John Lewis for my pillows and duvets. ;)

Yes, but I spent £16 in a sale on a goosedown one years ago which was excellent and I spent a similar price on another one which has turned out to be pure crap

I bought a decent foam one from JL a few years ago and it hasn't lost its shape. Cost me £25.

What you require is something to hold your head in the correct position with regards to your spine, however you lie. Your head shouldn't strain up or down from your spine's line. If you see what I mean.

So, a good pillow is one that facilitates that. How you know beforehand is more difficult, since you can't really take it home on trial. You just have to judge.

Practically all their pillows are out of stock

You don't know until you've slept on them for a month....

I have a tempur mattress and bought the pillows they had out at the time, which were the the neck support shaped ones. I dispensed with the pillows eventually. I gave one to a flatmate who liked it and the other, i'm not sure where it is. around somewhere.

I would be willing to give the pillow-shaped ones ago if I hadn't already spent that sort of money on the others.

I wouldn't recommend the moulded ones if you like to sleep on your side or have your arm underneath. Though I think they've brought out deeper shaped ones...

Sounds like mine, I spent 40 euros on a foam neck support one and its the bees knees - still going strong after 3 years. Ms S spent 8 euros on one recently and it's like laying your head on a funny shaped cork board. :(

Maybe check on a professional medical website or something?

Tempurfoam is the mutts - Wry won't have it, but I'd love to get one...

I would think those would be lower end pillows. Buy the nicer ones, they last longer and much more comfortable, especially the down-filled ones :)
