Hillsborough files: Cabinet office appeals against disclosure

The government is appealing against an order to release cabinet discussions from the aftermath of the 1989 Hillsborough stadium disaster.
Then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher held meetings about the tragedy, in which 96 Liverpool fans died.
Information commissioner Christopher Graham has ruled that the information is in the public interest.
The Cabinet Office said any information must be released in line with the Hillsborough independent inquiry.

The withheld files include reports presented to Mrs Thatcher and correspondence between her office and the then Home Secretary Douglas Hurd and minutes of meetings she attended.

They're fucking cunts.

Why would they not want to disclose what was said?

They usually fight tooth and nail against releasing Cabinet stuff as a matter of course, probably to prevent people asking for them by making such a fuss over any request (irrespective of the actual contents) that people wont bother, and then release them en masse when the secrecy period is up (and everyone that can be blamed is dead). The FOI request for these documents took place in 2009 (ie: under Labour) and was rejected out of hand then, so its not just a matter of those bloody tories.

It's irrelevant, it's a fucking disgrace that they are even considering delaying this info any more than they already have.

Its not irrelevant to point out that they invariably (and of whatever government) do this when asked for information of this kind and which has been at the level that this information has been at, though I agree it is a disgrace.

What I meant was it's irrelevant Labour acted the cunt to. The Tories, ie Thatcher and major, were part of the original cover up. I ain't trying to score points for Burnham and his mates, everyone of the politicians who helped cover this up, of whatever politicla hue, should be in the dock aswell.

doubt Maggie knew much about what happened although I doubt the discussion was much above urbanites discussing eton:(
no love lost for Liverpool or football fans in maggies cabinet.
unless the report was cops fucked up 96 proles died mwhaahaha how do we cover this shitstorm up which some how i doubt

It's a reasonable guess that Maggie Thatcher made horrendous comments about the dead in the cabinet discussions.

A possible embarrassment is that (and this is from memory so my details may be sketchy) when Hurd spoke about the tragedy to the House he basically said "we are now going to make all-seater stadia mandatory". It was pointed out by some Labour backbenchers that this was rather pre-empting the supposedly independent judicial inquiry being carried out by Taylor and as a result Hurd back-pedalled this position over the next few days and was - publically at least - not making any big decisions until Taylor's interim report was released.

I think it's pretty clear that the all-seater decision either had been made, or was being signalled very clearly to Taylor. It was certainly what the big clubs who were planning the Premiership breakaway wanted. It would be interesting to see how explicitly the requirement that Taylor find in favour of all-seater stadia was being made - if that was discussed at cabinet level (which I'd guess it was).

The all-seater stadia thing has always been a red herring in terms of public safety (one of the biggest mass deaths at football was the Bradford fire - in a seated stand - and I still wouldn't sit in the Main stand at Crystal Palace, a death trap basically) but a lot of rich powerful people wanted it.

I miss bouncing up and down in the Cold Blow shouting EIO EIO EIO EIO......

<anyway, we have waited a long time for the truth to come out on this, it stunk from the beginning.>

Long shot, but we know the corrupt relationship between Number 10, the police and Murdoch that's being partially exposed now goes back to the Thatcher era ...
I don't think it's too much of a long shot tbh, it sounds very believable. Not necessarily corruption involving bungs, but certainly intimate political relationships.
