Highbury Island

By which I mean the green space within the roundabout outside Highbury and Islington station. I had a nice tinny and read of a book there today. It is to all intents and purposes inaccessible however (no crossing, locked gate). Does anyone know what it is used for normally?

Higbury Corner and that island seemingly exists to be the butt of denizens of N1, N5 and N7's shared complaints of inaction by Islington Council and Transport for London.

They were talking about sorting this out when I worked off the Archway Road some fifteen years ago. I'm amazed that the "temporary" post office hasn't fallen down by now.

Work to peninsularise the traffic island is now supposedly scheduled for 2013-14.
