Gun siege at Colorado high school

Who says there is no need for gun control? The gun freaks will probably claim this is a "one off", but this sort of thing seems to happen at least once a year.:(

CO is a funny old place - its got the full range of 'MeriKans from Gun nuts to communard Hippies. Mate lives in a small township outside Boulder - the place is cool , with Food co-ops ans community run cinema, vegi delis, local bands in the saloon etc , but go a mile up the road and its nutter gun nut survivalist gold miners who are not averse to putting a cap ( or 5 ) in yo' ass should you accidently cross into their land.

Barking

there gun control is completely barking washington DC it's illegal to own a gun but you can go outside of washington and tool up as much as you like:confused:

In the US, the ownership of firearms is closely linked to the idea of 'freedom'. But what about those people who want to be free of guns and all the trouble that comes with them? Aren't their civil/constitutional rights being ignored here?

I think freedom in this context means being able to own whatever the hell you want without some fussy pinko government telling you what to do - except if it's recreational drugs in which case you go to prison for a long time because drugs are very very bad.

That's very true....and guns probably kill more Americans than recreational drugs.

Ive got this awful sinking feeling that in an hour or two this thread will be hijacked by gun totin' fredom lovin' Right wing 'MeriKan attack dogs famous for their " straight talkin' ":(

they had the right to self defence and form milita's not actually much use these days but last centuary they were busy defeating the native americans and a big wilderness. theres still things like bears that can kill you and as theres several million guns in circulation gun control not much of a starter

Interestingly -Columbine is also in CO and we know about that.

The idea of CO being a frontier state still holds true in the minds of many residents and indeed many US citizens, I suppsoe the backdrop of wilderness and mountains helps reinforce this idea.

Its a state that has been described as schitzophrenic in nature - the hippies vs the the outlaws vs the prospectors and more recently, the influx of Hispanic workers into the area - all mixing it up.

You alos have the gambling - where Native MeriKan lands are now being set up with casinos like BlackHawk/ central city in Co. is trying to be like vegas, but is like a compressed version of Atlantic city instead.

Interesting times indeed for the State:(

As ( I think ) General Westmorland said in Vietnam, when being grilled by the press on a particulary devastaing attack on a Vietnamese settlement

" it was necessary to destroy the village in order to liberate it"

Um.:(

Of course, we all know that gun crime can be attributed to a lack of gun control.

That's why inner city areas in Britain are free of gun crime.

I would imagine car accidents is up there.

Oh and if they really wanna cut down on infant mortaility, they need to sort out their swimming pools. Parents in America are waaaaaay more likely to find their sprogs face down dead in a swimming pool than their brains being blown out from a gun incident - HOWEVER, I'm pro gun control, BUT if I lived in America, my decision to arm myself would be based on where I lived. If I was confident hardly anyone in my neighbourhood had guns, then sure I would not have a gun. However, if I lived in a place like Houston, I would arm myself to the teeth.

Thanks for that, I never realised it was that high.

A million people lost their health insurance this year. That number is bound to go up.

There are some priorities that are seriously out of order.

when they do do gun control its arse about face
.50 calibre rifles ooh scary scary they cost $5000 plus weigh best part of 40lbs and are about 6 foot long not much good for robbing banks or going on the rampage with same with heavy machine guns very expensive big heavy cost a
handguns cheap concealable very few restrictions
Thats why still in the UK you can legally own a high power rifle that can kill at over a mile because criminals don't use target/sniper rilfes and its actually very difficult to hit anything over 600 700 metres

I caught it on CNN at lunchtime and looked it up tonight - seems he was telling them he had a IED in his bag before picking out girls to take hostage.

Turned out his bag was full of "sex toys".

'likesfish' I don't know where you got this information but it is incorrect! (depending on your definition of high power!!)

Firearms are banned in the UK with the exception of shotguns and black powder loaders.

cheers,
Neil.
