People! What do you make of female TV commentators for bloke's football?

Prefer it? Don't like it? Don't care?

Poll coming right up!

Don't care. As long as they're a good commentator I couldn't give a monkeys about their gender.
That option has been provided for in the poll!

I have to be honest and say I generally prefer bloke commentators (dunno why - maybe because I associate bloke's voices more with football?) but I would certainly prefer a good women commentator over a shit bloke one.

And before anyone starts up, I'm more than happy to see more female refs/linesmen (linespersons?) etc etc.

Sensitive issue this one, but yeh I personally prefer male commentators. Makes me sound like a right sexist...!

I watched a fair bit of the women's world cup last year and even for that I preferred the blokes who covered it.

Nothing wrong with female commentators in principle. I'm not keen on the one they have on MOTD though. Her voice is too squeeky. A commentator needs a wide range of tones.

She sounds like a man.

Milk and two in mine then stobes :D

Can't see what the fuss is about. The trouble with football commentators these days is that there just aren't the quality of mentalist that we used to have in the 80s. I want there to be a certain wtf factor, you know.

my flatmate told me what to vote. his comment, is (slightly abridged) ''there are plenty of men who are no better than the woman on MOTD last night who don't get nearly as much stick''.

Considering the over-excited/master of the obvious wankers that call on the plays in here, if there's any women willing to take a chance commentating I'd welcome the change. Players are usually less hostile towards female journalists, so I reckon at least they'd make excellent ground-level reporters.

If it replaces Mark Lawrenson I am all for it.

I can just about tolerate John Motson, even if he is a massive talking cliche machine.

What I hear on the Beeb gives me the creeps, they just shout at a higher pitch. Maybe has something to do with bbc policy of redistributing jobs to all representative groups of the population.

Now Charlotte Green, I could listen to her commentate on anything.

So what about female presenters? Are you happy with them Editor?
No problem at all, so long as they know their stuff, love football and aren't just being shoved on to introduce some "glamour."

Players are usually less hostile towards female journalists, so I reckon at least they'd make excellent ground-level reporters.
I've absolutely no problem with women interviewing players either.

I guess the thing that male commentators have the edge on women is the fact that they've probably most likely been involved in football for a long while before women had significant recognition in football presenting, punditry, competitive playing etc.

This for me often means that those historical references like 'back in our day...' and 'I remember when...' and 'we haven't seen the likes of that...' probably don't often extend beyond recent history for female ex-players. Also the fact that we know the current male commentators have been in and around all the major grounds as pundits (and often players) for years just adds that air of knowledge in all the small areas and annoying though he is, people like Lawrenson do have that advantage - even if what he says is bollocks sometimes.

I would genuinely love to see more female refs, officials, presenters right now in fact...and I would like to see the womens game become bigger to the point where we have more famous players who will become recognisable and respected when they go on to commentate.

I have to say... I have a certain admiration for anyone who can call a game. When I watch, I really couldn't say with much certainty who has the ball. I guess that's why we need commentators.

Also is it or isn't it the case that women could play for a 'men's' team if they were good enough? It's happened in cricket.

To back up what I already said about a significant participating history being important to historical knowledge in the context of the current sport, I have no problem whatsoever with female commentators on male tennis, male horseracing, swimming, athletics, and golf

(and probably many other sports too that women have long had a profession in)

Also is it or isn't it the case that women could play for a 'men's' team if they were good enough? It's happened in cricket.

nope, not allowed. when did it happen in cricket btw? i know its happened in golf and snooker but dont know the cricket story

Couldn't care less to be honest. Mark Lawrenson's voice sounds quite effeminate so we're halfway there. :)

With presenting, I guess there might be a bit of an old boys network. Gary Lineker, Ray Stubbs and previously Bob Wilson are all ex-players, and Gabby Yorath had the links through her dad.

The woman commentator on MOTD last night was shite, and her voice was irritating too. I don't know whether that was because what she was saying was shite (way too many cliches and obvious nonsense) or that her voice was annoying from the outset.

I started wondering whether I wanted Stuart Hall to get her job. At the minute he's only on R5 live talking about minor NW matches but even so...

There's no option for "They obviously don't get my respect because they've not gone through the game at any decent level that's interesting".

It would be interesting to compare the England national womens team with male non league footballers, and I wonder what level they would be similar too?

Perhaps Eton schoolboys around 14/15 years old?

And I try to be egalitarian all the time, but we are not talking about some sort of utopian wishful thinking.

Also is it or isn't it the case that women could play for a 'men's' team if they were good enough? It's happened in cricket.

To be fair even the most talented female footballer wouldn't be able to get into a run of the mill non-league side.
