Butternut Squash -v- Marrow

Are these actually different things?

My mum gave me what she said was a butternut squash, to make soup with. All the butternut squashes I've ever seen before have been orange, whereas this one was green and stripy and differently shaped.

Anyway, I've peeled it and chopped it and I have to say it does look very butternut squash-like, but with far fewer seeds.

Yes.

And you've probably got a squash of some sort, just not one of the butternut type. Acorn, kabocha and other squash names I can remember are vague possibilities

Ach, they're not that bad. But they need to be a plant variety that's bred for marrow sized fruit, not just an oversized and neglected courgette.

Given that this even feels vaguely like a butternut squash, it ain't a marrow

Well, it tastes OK. Not as nice as butternut squash soup. Glad I put lots of pepper and ginger in it.

Hubbard and Crown Prince squashes are at least the equal of butternut imo, albeit they tend to be a fair bit larger

To be fair we got our squashes hopelessly confused down the allotment this year, so I'm only mildly convinced that we grew Waltham squashes. It would have been worse had not most of the plants perished in the downpours and waterlogged soil. Barely got going before the winter weather struck.

Marrow is rank. Reminds me of the awful dinners made by my dad when my mum was working in the pub.

Is it a bit like this?

If so its a Delicata squash. I have grown them a few times, tastes like butternut squash but easier to peel.

I love roasted butternut squash with roasted sweet potato. And red onion.
Dribble.

I've never eaten marrow. But when I was small my dad made me pose with the ones he grew in the garden so they looked bigger in photos.

Marrow is soft, squash is (relatively) hard.

I really like marrow. I think it's very underrated. Lovely flavour and texture, just the right side of bitterness. But it needs seasoning and spices and lots of other interesting things. I find squash a bit more touch and go.

My mother used to cook stuffed marrow when we were young. I liked it (wouldn't eat it now as I don't eat meat) it was very tasty. Marrow on it's own is a bit bland.

I really love squash/pumpkin, a whole one is too big for me but a couple of local shops sell it in slices. I think there are quite a few varieties, the one with the pale outside skin I like the best as it seems to have more flavour then the darker green one. Mmm... think I'll get some at the weekend :)

I think there are quite a few varieties

There are absolutely loads of different squash and pumpkins varieties, all different shapes, sizes and colours. There's a small blue skinned type that's gorgeous. Really orange flesh that tastes very nutty and not unlike split lentils

A marrow is just a courgette that's been left to grow massive, as hinted at by tarannau.

Yep. A marrow is a courgette that's gone to seed. marrow cultivars are basically courgettes that have been bred to be better eaters when they're mature.
