Brixton Beer year two

Hey all.

So last year we grew hops across Brixton - in community gardens, pots, balconies, back gardens, park and green patches on council estates - and made over 1200 pints. The beer, brewed by the micro brewery at the Florence, sold out of all the beer in a week ...

This year we're doing it all over again so if anyone is interested in becoming a beer grower please sign up info@city-farmers dot co dot uk. We have also got people doing the same project in Hackney, Crystal Palace, Streatham and probably Bristol, Cardiff and Southampton if anyone fancies getting involved there. Same email.

Packs £20 for everything you need to grow the hops (a perennial plant which will give you many, many years of delicious beer) plus a tenner for any extra plants. As well as the packs you get beer (more this year as there will be more hops!), all the guidance you need and hopefully another trip to a Kentish Hop farm to pick and eat hop shoots with a bus full of brewers and a barrel of beer. Reckon I might do some home brewing classes this year as well. Maybe.

We will give out the packs and do the planting on St. Patrick's Day but you'll need to get in touch before then so we can buy everything :)

No gardening skill required. Seriously.

Woohoo! Looking forward to more extended sampling of the finished product :)

We're going to give it a plug on BrixtonBuzz too.

I couldn't grow any hops last year as I was in the middle of moving house....really up for it this year (assuming our landlord doesn't kick us out)

Sadly I don't have a garden, but I recently bought some kit with a view to having a go at brewing my own. Would be keen to be in contact with people who've done it before to get hints and tips etc.

Helen CF's your lady and I'm sure she'll be back to keep us updated!

Hey all. Brixton Beer and our sister project the Palace Pint are meeting up on Friday for an evening of beer tasting (with a proper beer sommelier guy!) and growing tips. Any growers or people who might be interested in growing hops in Brixton, Crystal Palace and anywhere near by are very welcome. Grape and Grain, 6.30 to 8.30, raised area at the back. It's only a short bus/cycle from Brixton...

Also for anyone that works near Goodge Street, I'm giving a short talk tonight about growing beer. There will be interesting brewers and some people from Camra there if it is your sort of thing :)

And to the brewing your own guy - yeah it really easy! Wilkos have a good range of brewing stuff for cheap (there's one in Penge that is decent). I'm thinking about starting a home brewing circle???

Hops grow anywhere but they get much more productive with a bit of sunshine.

Oh, that ticks a lot of boxes for me as
  • I'll be moving close to Penge
  • I wanna start brewing beer

I brewed my own at uni. It was strong and there were unpleasant noisy side effects. Didn't stop anyone from drinking it though.

Shame - but there will other times. St Patties Day we're giving out/planting the hops if you're about then.
Sadly I can't do Friday either but would be v interested in a home brew circle. I've still to het hold of ingredients but it's on the list for March. I'll keep an eye on this thread for future events and hope to make it for the Patrick's day hopathon.

Hey all. Tomorrow is the deadline for orders for this year, so email me info [at] city-farmers.co.uk if you want a plant. Crystal Palace are thrashing us - they've got 100 orders!

Can you remind me what you mean by orders, are you selling in smaller amounts?

Sadly I am pathetic at nurturing any kind of life, no matter how simple or low maintenance the flora or fauna.

However, I will once again be looking forward to the new product once it goes on sale as the last batch was delicious. Helen, would you have been on the stall at the Lambeth Country Show? I believe I might have spoken to you at some length about this project - I found it very interesting.

No that would have been Ann - I was in Greece for my mum's wedding so I missed the brew day and the country show!! I know it sounds silly cos I was in Greece but I was really gutted after working on the project all year...

It was delicious, eh?

And nice one Brixton Hatter!! I assume you've put your order in and I'll be seeing you on Sunday. :)

I'll be around Sunday - do I need to sign up for the mailing list in order to buy some hops?

Yes - the order deadline was Monday. email me info [at] city-farmers.co.uk if you want one as we have a couple spare for just such occasions :)
