Aiden Burley's Olympics tweets

Twitter controversy

During the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics of the 2012 Olympic Games, taking place in London, Burley caused a stir on Twitter by denouncing the content of the ceremony as
"...leftie multicultural crap. Bring back Red Arrows, Shakespeare and the Stones."
Burley went on to suggest that it was
"the most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen - more than Beijing, the capital of a Communist state." [11]
Downing Street sources swiftly sought to distance themselves from Burley's comments.[12] Following criticism of Burley's remarks by fellow parliamentarians and celebrities, alongside calls for his resignation on Twitter, speculation was fuelled that Prime MinisterDavid Cameron would either advise him to stand down or withdraw the Conservative whip. No statement has yet been issued. [13]Subsequently, Burley attempted to row back on his remarks, tweeting
"Seems my tweet has been misunderstood. I was talking about the way it was handled in the show, not multiculturalism itself."
Burley's attempt to clarify his remarks was met with incredulity my many on Twitter.

He's clearly a worthless piece of shit but are we really at the point in this country where someone can't express an opinion about something without facing calls for his resignation? And, for the record, I thought the opening ceremony was pretty right wing.

He's in public office FFS he's not being some opinionated gobby tit down the pub after a few too many. There are many reasons why this guy should resign, and showing the staggering lack of judgement to give voice to such an obnoxious (and factually inaccurate) opinion in a public forum is but one of them....

Wasn't he the one who was seen at a dinner with somebody dressed as a SS officer?
he only got elected in 2010 , was seen as a rising star before the Nazi stuff - now Stan Collymore has threatened to run against him at next election (Stan is from Cannock Chase which is where Nazi Burley is MP)

Why is it a staggering lack of judgement to say he didn't like the Opening Ceremony and then give the reasons? Would you be arguing for the resignation of a Labour or Lib Dem MP who said it was a load of nationalistic toss that shamefully glossed over the many, many shortcomings of this country's social and political history?

Your link is broken.

Its not a staggering lack of judgement to say that.

Its a staggering lack of judgement to have a colossal dig at something that most of the rest of the country (and most of the rest of the world) clearly enjoyed a great deal, and of course something that could well be one of the very few things that his boss has managed not to wreck, mess up or generally ruin.

It's perfectly acceptable to have a go at him for his opinion but calling for him to resign because he didn't like the Opening Ceremony and explained why is just plain laughable. Are you seriously suggesting he should resign because he's being a spoilsport?

He should resign because he reckons rap is only 20 years old and that there should have been less of it (actually was Grime, born in the east end of London but nevermind) and more coldplay  ;)

I worked with a guy last year who had gone to school with the lead singer of Coldplay, and as he was a musician I think there was definitely some bitterness there

Come on, he railed against multiculturalism, how is he supposed to represent his constituents if he hates multiculturalism and dresses as a Nazi for fun?

What was right wing about the opening ceremony btw?

If his constituents don't like what he has said then I hope they start a campaign to have him ousted.

It was the story of GB's social, cultural and political history seen through an establishment filter. The Queen's wonderful and can take a joke, the NHS is a shining jewel (despite successive government's trying to dismantle it), here are some lovely brave soldiers (better not mention Iraq, Afghanistan or the British Empire though), here come the Suffragettes (ignore all that embarrassing stuff with the King's horse though, eh?). It was a Disneyland version of the country but then it was always going to be, so it's pointless complaining really.

For all the reasons given before this reply, it's pretty fucking obvious why it's a staggering lack of judgement. It's irrelevant what party he's from, the guy's an odious little man regardless.

So you think that a party leader should have no say when one of his MPs outs themselves as basically a racist?

I don't think this is a matter for the party leader. Burley hasn't used any racist language, he's just said why he didn't like the Opening Ceremony. Do I think he's a racist? Yes, probably, but I don't think that necessarily applies here.
