Abandoned station: Wolverhampton Low Level

I didn't think near-intact closed stations still existed in the UK any more, but look at this sorrowful sight:

It's got canopies, platforms - even the rails are still intact!

The station was closed to passengers back in 1972, but stayed open as a goods depot and then survived several demolition attempts. Sadly, it looks like at least part of it will be demolished soon :(

<apologies for the image-size>

Great photo! :)

Surprised a big town like Wolverhampton would only have had two platforms though? Sad if the station gets demolished but at least the GWR line between B'ham and Wolverhamton has been revived.

:eek:

I thought most old stations had either been redeveloped or demolished by now too.

Sights like this:

seem mainly to have turned into things like this:

Tbh it really is staggering to think of just how much, in the way of stations and other architecture, were simply abandoned after the Beeching Axe...

I thought that was Cheam train station in the 1980s for a moment, though that was still serving the general public.

Still is!

Stuff like that is sad to see. If the rumours are true re. "Beeching II", we could see more mothballing and more abandoned stations in a few years.

It's sad about the Wolverhampton station but at least it is going to become a focal point of the canalside regeneration (as per the website) and not just demolished.

There is a damned good pub - with lots of railway ephemera - Black country ales and quality cheese and onion sarnies (the sort with half an onion in rough chunks inside) - about 5 mins from that station. Cannot remember the name but well worth a trip if you are in the area.
